Taking A Time Out

It seems like our lives are so busy these days with a to-do list that's longer then my arm. I often have to stop and remind myself to slow down and enjoy the things around me. I'm always reminding myself its the little things that matter to my family. Yes, getting things accomplished is important but not at the expense of ignoring my family.
Our boys love to skateboard and they love for us to come outside and watch them. Since my husband is now working late each evening I've been making more of an effort to go out and do nothing but sit and watch and okay be a cheerleader for them.
This past evening our youngest (our daredevil) fell and hurt his leg. When we came in I said, "Why don't you get in the shower (which was followed my moaning and the wonderful words Mommmm) then those words of moaning ceased when I followed up with, "While you're in the shower, I'll make a batch of brownies!" Then it was "REALLY!! You're the best Mom ever (followed by a big hug)!!! Then all the shower blues vanished and life was happy again, the shower did have to wait until he cracked the eggs for me, since that;s his favorite part of cooking!
We work hard on communication with the boys and times like this encourages them talk and talk and talk. I often find out things that I did not know and hear about dreams and goals I did not know they were considering. Take time today to do something special with your children. You'll be surprised what you might learn.

Building A Healthy Immune System

Since getting a bad case of the flu several weeks ago the boys have had a hard time getting better. When they get around other who may be carrying a bug they are like magnets, catching everything. The doctor said we needed to keep them in as much as possible so their immune system can built back up. I have been reading up on ways to help build a healthy immune system and found a helpful article here from the University of Kentucky. What is your immune system and why is it important? Each person is born with a system in his/her body to fight off disease caused by bacteria, microbes, viruses, toxins and even parasites. This is your immune system. Some people have strong immune systems, others do not. The immune system has many processes with one of three particular jobs to do:

1. stopping disease from entering the body

2. killing bacteria or viruses once they enter the body but before they make you sick

3. destroying viruses and/or bacteria after they have created disease.

The immune system can recognize viruses that have been in your body before. The first time a virus enters your body, a healthy immune system will develop antibodies or other compounds that are designed to attack this virus. The next time this virus enters your body, these antibodies are ready to attack right away.

A few healthy immune building foods the we have been enjoying

  • Blueberries
  • Red Grapes
  • Oranges
  • Plums
  • Broccoli
  • Beets
  • Red Bell Pepper
  • Corn
  • Onion
  • Spinach (love using this in salads)
  • Nuts
  • Cheese
A diet high in fruits and vegetables has many of the phytonutrient critical to enhance immunity as well as many of the important vitamins and minerals. A steady and balanced intake of essential vitamins and mineral helps to keep our immune systems working properly by providing us protection from infections and disease. Fish, poultry, lean meat, low-fat dairy products, cereals and legumes (peas, lentils, beans) are all good sources of minerals. Foods such as cheese, eggs or liver, which supply vitamin A, and spinach, sweet potatoes or carrots, which are good sources of beta carotene, should also be eaten daily.

I've never been a "worry wort Mom" but seeing how sick they were with this H1N1 flu has caused me to become a bit more concerned. Washing hands, keeping shoes on their feet when outside, and eating healthy food has become more of a focus in our house. They don't know it yet, but the flu shot is next on our to-do list! Shhhh, let's not tell them just yet! I hope you stay healthy this flu season too!

Food Lion-Deal of the Day

This week my favorite Food Lion has Ground Chuck on sale for $1.68lb. but when I went to get some I was excited to find some on clearance making it just .99 cents a lb! What a blessing!! I paid $15 for three giant packs, came home and fixed several meals.

Up first, two meat loaves......
next taco meat for taco salad and later taco soup......
then hamburgers with a few extra for lunch the next day......
then meat balls! My friend Tracey at Girls to Grow made meat balls last week and I remembered how delicious they looked. When my kids saw these it was their vote for dinner!
The stove received a good work out today! I also had enough to make two batches of ground beef for a pot of spaghetti and impossible cheeseburger pie. With in an hour and a half I had several meals made and placed in the freezer. Now on to the next task at hand...laundry! Hope you have a productive day!

A Great Deal @ Goodwill

Anyone who knows me, knows I love to find a good deal and I love to shop at our local thrift stores. This week I was on the hunt for a piece of luggage. Now that I am traveling more I needed a good piece that I could pull. I was looking for three qualities:

  1. Something with good wheels that I could pull not carry
  2. Something large enough to hold all my supplies including my pillow. I hate taking in four or five small bags.

  3. Clean

To my surprise the first shop I went into had a beautiful gray Samsonite piece that fit all my qualifications then some! The best part, I only paid $2.69!!!! That made my day!

This past weekend we went out of town to sell our linen at a festival and on the way there I realized I forgot a book to read. Knowing I would be the one at the festival all day I wanted to have something to read. On our way we passed a Goodwill so we stopped in and to my surprise Kyle found three books for just .49 cents each and I found one for $.99! My book was retailed for $12.95 and Kyles were $8.99 each. All four books were practically new with the binging still in tack. To purchase the books new it would have cost almost $50 but we walked out paying just $2.46! I also love going to the Goodwill Auction found here . Its a fun site to watch, you never know what you're going to find!

A Birthday Menu

One year when Kyle was just a little boy he has strep throat on his birthday so for his birthday breakfast he has ice cream! That started a tradition that the boys look forward to each year. Not only that but they get it in bed!
They also get to pick their favorite dinner and now, its all three meals. Its always interesting to see what they will choose.
Now that Kyle is 14 its no longer just a simple hamburger! He saw a show on the discovery channel and they made this
"Juicy Lucy" burger and Kyle could not wait to try it!

Because it was a birthday burger it was made much larger then normal!
One burger filled with gooey cheese!
Since its Kyles birthday the cheese had to be hot!

The burger was bigger then the bun!!
Just a hint if you decide to make these, poke a hole in the
burger to let the steam out, the cheese gets super hot!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY KYLE!!!

1 Sale A Day

One Sale A Day added a new category called family and they have been having some good sales. Go here to view the daily sale! Maybe you will find a deal of the day! Hint, if you are into Wii, they often have items for under $5!!! Keep and eye open and if you see and item you like snag it quick because this stuff often goes fast!

Party Time

Continuing with Caleb's party for Kyle the birthday boy! Caleb wanted to play a game with Kyle so they chose the game Caleb received for Christmas. I could hear them in the room laughing and having a great time together. When I went back to see what was going on I could see the joy on their faces and they were in their room just enjoying the "party" and being brothers.

This is a great game for any family! Its like a giant "Wheres Waldo Game." They love it!
Remember, this? After the game, Caleb came running in the kitchen to get his ribbon! He said it was the prize for Kyle winning the game! Kyle later said, I wondered why he was letting me win! Kyle had to ware it all day and did so with honor!

Up next...the birthday menu.....

Making Plans

Caleb had plans in his mind that he wanted to do for Kyles party and nothing was going to stand in his way of making this the best birthday party ever! The first plan he had was to get poster board and make a "huge" birthday card! Off to Big Lots we went. I thought there were not many people in Big Lots to make him sick so off we went.
He had so much fun making this card. He knew just what he wanted and worked hard drawing first with pencil then coloring it in.

Of course it had to have a skateboarder and a ramp! I mean what is a birthday with out a skateboard!!!
Since this was the day before his birthday that we went shopping Caleb decided it would be fantastic if they had a pre-birthday party party! He found this Garfield movie for $3 and a package of cookies that "they never had before" for a whole $1.80 so for under $5 they had supplies for a pre-party party!
Because Big Lots does not sell poster board we had to run into Dollar General just to get poster board and ended up finding a few more treasures! Caleb came to me and had all this in his hand and was so excited to find "birthday stuff!" He was almost jumping up and down when he found these items and could not believe he they had a 14 for the cake!!!
This was the best gift he found and could not wait to give it to him! I thought he was just going to give it to him in the morning but nope, he had a special plan for this little $1 treasure!
Before we left on this little shopping trip he asked his brother what his favorite candy was. While at the store he found all Kyles favorites so of course we had to get all three because, "Mom, its Kyle's birthday!" Up next, the party....
