The New Missions team of 44 was safely evacuated from Haiti on Friday, arriving at a secure location in the Dominican Republic. Arrangements are being made to fly the team back to Orlando, with an anticipated arrival as early as tonight.

With great anticipation we're awaiting word if Dale is with this group. We're rejoicing at God's goodness and continue to pray for the others who still today are waiting for answers.

Press Release January 14, 2010

January 14 – 12:00PM

We’ve had communication from our team in Haiti this morning, and everyone is doing well.

An evaluation team is being flown in to Haiti today. This team is being sent to provide assistance and safety for the team during the evacuation. Currently, we are working on two evacuation plans. The first plan is through the government—and consists of using either a boat or helicopters for the evacuation. The second plan would be a private evacuation—using our resources from the Dominican Republic.

Despite this tragedy, the team is fulfilling the mission that God has called them to. We believe God has each and every one of them there for a purpose.

How can you help with relief efforts?

Donate to one of three earthquake relief funds on our home page here
Attend our Haiti Rebuild Concert Sunday night, January 17, 6:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Orlando, featuring comedian Tim Hawkins. An offering will be taken, and all of proceeds will be used for relief efforts in Haiti.

Please continue to remember our New Missions team and the entire country of Haiti in your prayers.

Live news updates from Haiti are available at the official New Missions
Facebook page or at Newmissions.org.

Death & Damages

We have major damage to buildings here in Haiti. The destruction is beyond repair. Numerous buildings will need to be torn down and re-built. Temporary structures will need to be erected in the meantime. We are still reviewing the overall damage to our 22 elementary schools and High School.

Here is the latest update on deaths:
• a kindergarten teacher died

• three of our school children died, one from Birey and two from Amber-Pere

• numerous people died in Leogane when buildings collapsed

Here is the latest update on building damage:

• two elementary school buildings were damaged beyond repair

• our medical clinic building is damaged beyond repair

• our Bordmer office is damaged beyond repair

• two churches are damaged beyond repair

• we have Haitian men travelling to each location reviewing damage and we will have another updated list of building damage. We will need to re-build.

As of now, our top priority is hiring nurses for each of our 22 elementary school locations and High School to provide medical care in the aftermath of this historic earthquake. As children may experience infections or illness and have increased first-aid needs, we will be right in their area available to meet the need.

The amazing sight in the middle of all the tragedy was villagers singing songs of praise along the road last night. The power of the Gospel prevails. Today, we distributed food to two villages and all our schools already have food on hand to cook and prepare as children return to school very soon. Immediately, we will purchase more rice and bulgur (wheat) to meet the needs in the surrounding villages. On January 26, we will ship a 40ft cargo container to Haiti with necessary medical clinic supplies and construction supplies.

The mission team is safe here at New Missions. We have food, water, and diesel fuel on hand to last for at least one month. Concentrated efforts from Central Florida are being organized to help provide transportation for the team here to leave as soon as possible. We thank God for his protection.

Serving together,Timothy DeTellis

A Miracle of Water

Lonnie S. from Thompson Town, PA began repairing the pipes from the well after damage due to the earthquake. When we returned to the mission this morning, the well had very little pressure, now it is strong again. What an amazing miracle.

Delivering Rice

Right now at New Missions a food distribution is taking place. All of our mission team is safe and thankfully not hurt. Beans and bulger (wheat) are being given to villagers during this time of crisis.

A Blessing In Haiti

Today coupons and sales just don't seem to be that important. Yesterday we all heard the news of the devastation in Haiti and as the hours pass the news becomes more grim then anyone could have ever imagined. If you're like me when something like this happens in another country we often think "Oh, that is so sad." But, it really does not hit home. Today, this hit home for our family. My brother is in Haiti with New Missions and when the earthquake hit we were like the other thousands of American families and did not have contact with him. We are blessed that God saw fit to protect him (his name is not being mentioned at this point but those who know "him" know who we are talking about) and the team of New Missions. As we see the devastation on the news and as we hear the reports coming from New Missions we are overwhelmed with God's love and protection. He is safe and the team that he is with is all safe! He has told us over and over again; "I am doing what God wants me to do and I am safe." We rest assured this evening that he is in God's hand of protection and our thoughts and prayers go out to the thousands and thousands who are still without answers this evening.

I've been praying all day asking God, "What can I do?" Then God showed me what I can do and that is help bring a little comfort to family and friends who have been contacting me all day wanting to know if he is safe. I know many of our family and friends are not on facebook but are desperate for any glimpse of information so with the help of facebook post and contact from "our brother" I will do my best to keep you updated. I hope it helps you as much as it has helped me. Like my sister said today; "Its often harder on the ones left behind wondering then it is on the one going through the experience or in our brothers case the adventure!"

01/12/10

Reported today that all mission team members in Haiti are safe at the mission compound after an earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale struck the country approximately 10 miles from the mission. New Missions requests that everyone would lift the people of Haiti up in their prayers. Although all the mission tea...m members are safe, the days ahead will no doubt show an ever growing report of disaster to the Haitian people.

01/12/10

"The ground was like an ocean wave at New Missions when the earthquake hit. Most of our team was at the Missions Training Center, it was just before 5pm. At the time, I was with Bob S. doing a video interview of a TFA student when all of a sudden we heard a big boom and the ground began to rock. The concrete pathway I was standing on at the end of the Missions Training Center, closest to the ocean cracked in half and the earth began to open. We all fell down. Started hearing things crashing and people screaming. At first we stood in a circle together between the ocean and the missions training center and confirmed no one was hurt. We moved to the other side of the mission and began to load the vehicles to evacuate. Along the road to the High School we saw continued structural damage. However, Christians were singing in the villages.
At the High School, we circled the vehicles and some slept on the trucks and some slept on the ground on a tarp. We are thankful to be safe. There is extensive damage to buildings at the mission. Please pray!" ~Tim DeTellis, in Haiti

Candles

As soon as cold weather hits, I love to have the candles lit! We don't burn wood in the fire place because it needs a new topper (not sure the name of it) and that is on the bottom of the repair list. Since we can't use it, I decided one year to put a few candles inside. I added a few shrubs and pine cones and it gives the living room a comforting feeling. During Christmas we had large Christmas balls inside. The candle light flickering on the balls was just beautiful.
Candles can be expensive so I keep an eye open at the thrift shop. Since I am burning them in the fire place it does not matter if they have already been burned a little or if they have an ugly picture on the front. In fact the small white one in front, has a nice photo of "Jesus" on the front! Something I would never purchase on its own but when I saw it at the thrift shop unlit for just $.49 cents, I just turned it around and it looks great in the fireplace! I found all the red ones in a bag for $1.99 and three of the white ones for just $.49 cents each.
We light them each evening along with more on the mantel. It makes for a relaxing evening and I don't know anyone who does not enjoy a relaxing evening at home!

Break It Up or Let It Go?

Last evening I had to make a decision, break it up or let it go. The boys were in bed (they share a room with bunk beds) and I could hear them talking. I could hear soft talking, then our oldest would say "Good Job!" I decided to listen to what they were doing before telling them to be quiet and get to sleep. Our youngest received a Nintendo DS for Christmas and was looking forward to "texting" his brother from the top bunk! I know, we thought it was funny too! Anyway, after a little investigation I could tell they were texting but what cracked me up was that our oldest would say a spelling word and our youngest had to spell it and text it to him! So guess what I decided to do? Yep, just let it go! They "texed" spelling words for about 30 minutes then it got really quiet and they were sound a sleep! I guess that's what you call choosing your battles!

Homemade Chips

Remember that pot of delicious Taco Soup I made this week? I always serve it with sliced tortilla shells but this evening I wanted to try something a little different to give them a little kick. I decided to bake them and let me just say, I'll never serve them plain again!

Since I was going to serve them on soup I decided to slice them in bite size pieces and the pizza slicer does the job perfectly.

Next, drizzle with a little olive oil, just enough to coat the pieces. I like to mix with my hands so I can feel that all the pieces are covered.
Since I was serving with taco soup I seasoned the shells with taco seasoning. Sprinkle with your favorite spices or herbs then toss again. I also tried it with cinnamon sugar and served with ice cream! Oh, my goodness!!!!!
Broil for three minutes (but keep your eye on them because every oven is different) Toss gently then broil for another 2-3 minutes or until golden brown.

Remove from oven and let cool.

They continue to crisp as they cool.

Don't you just love this thrift store deal! A stone pan for just $1.49!!!!

Serve with soup and enjoy!

So, how would you flavor your shells? I think next time I am going to try Parmesan cheese!

Thrift Store Finds

I found several great deals at the thrift store over the holidays. My favorite deal was these vases. There are five all together and they are just beautiful when the candles are lit. I got all five for just $4.49! I was so excited!
I put them on the mantel along with a few other decorations for a beautiful display. I could not wait each evening to light the candles and the little trees. The Merry Christmas sign was a deal at Sams, the week before Christmas it was marked down the just $4.61!
My sister created a beautiful center piece for the table at my brothers house. She found all these glass and vases at the thrift shop for just .12 cents each!
She filled them with salt, placed a tea light in the middle and it was spectacular!
She piled fake snow and added a few handmade snowflakes. It was really a beautiful and inexpensive centerpiece. Add my Mom to the photo and its even prettier!

Easy BBQ Brisket

On Christmas Eve we celebrate with family and have a nice meal. Its never the same from year to year but this year the meal was a huge hit! I've made brisket before but never BBQ. I was nervous about it but it turned out fantastic! It was so good that we had it again this week for our new years day meal! Its really quite an easy dish you just need to devote time. You can do like we did, let it cook while you're sleeping!

Ingredients

  • 15-17 lb Brisket

  • ! bunch Celery

  • 2 Large Onions

  • Garlic Salt (enough to cover both sides)

BBQ Sauce Ingredients

Mix together and warm in microwave for 2 minutes. Let sit until ready to baste meat.

Getting Started

  • Briskets have a lot of fat, don't be afraid of that because the fat give it flavoring as it cooks and keep it from drying out.

  • If you have a large pad of fat you can always peel it away after its finished cooking and before adding BBQ sauce.

I cook my brisket in a roaster but an oven will do too. Just make sure you have a pan large enough for the meat and the juice it will produce.

Layer the bottom of the roaster with celery and onion

Rub both sides of brisket with garlic salt. Use enough to cover both sides really well.

Once you have it rubbed down, place on top of celery and onion

Cook 325 degrees for 12 hours. This is how mine looked in the morning. The layer of fat starts cooking down and turns crispy and brown. Its ready to eat at this point; however, we like our meat falling apart where you don't need a knife to cut it. Then its so tender and makes amazing BBQ sandwiches.

Once you have cooked the meat for 12 hours turn the heat up to 375 and start basting with BBQ sauce. If you have a thick layer of fat trim it at this point. Once you trim off the fat, season again with garlic salt and let cook for about 20 minutes before adding BBQ sauce. I only baste twice. I add a thick layer then cook for 45 minutes. Baste again and cook for another 30 minutes and at this point turn the heat up to 400 degrees and tilted the lid to the side. This will cause it to thicken up and the BBQ sauce will cling to the meat. Trust me everyone will come running!!! Heat the remaining BBQ sauce and have it available for those who want extra.

This cut of meat provided three meals for my family and I have extra to add to baked beans for another dish. I hope you enjoy this as much as we have.

UPDATE - My sister cooked her brisket in the oven this week and gave me a few tips, during the first 12 hours of cooking turn the heat down to 300 and cover with foil. The roaster has more moist heat and the oven has a dryer heat so cover with foil. After the 12 hours follow directions above.
