Its A Party!!!

Mark (my honey) and I have talked alot about the training of our children. One area that we have worked on is training them to love one another. When we had a second child we worked hard to create unity between the boys not allow the green eyed monster of jealousy to come between them. From day one Caleb has looked up to Kyle and does just what Kyle says to do. They have their moments of boys being boys but for the most part we are truly blessed with their relationship. They are best buddies. In fact our youngest who is 7 years younger asked if he could start doing more school work so he could go to college with his older brother. We are not looking forward to that day because we know the ache of separation will be great. They love doing special thing for each other and when one is hurting the other is right there to cheer them up. Because the boys are still not feeling well we had to forgo plans for a birthday sleepover and camping trip. Our youngest, age 8, took it upon himself to plan a party for his brother! He had in his mind what he wanted to do to celebrate and he put the plans in motion. First up the cake!

Becaue of coupons we had several cake mixes in the house so Caleb took the different flavors to Kyle and let him pick out which one he wanted. Caleb thought it was so funny that a cake was called carrot! He thought is was even stranger that Kyle would choose "carrot" cake for his birthday cake and not chocolate! Caleb said, "Well, its his birthday but I don't know why he wants this kind, who wants carrots in cake!"
Thanks to the cooking classes this summer he knew how to make a cake and I had to do very little work to help him. I did have to intervean a little when he wanted to leave half the batter in the pan for Kyle to eat! He said, "But Mom, its his birthday and he likes to lick the bowl!" I had to explain, licking the bowl was fun but eatting half the batter would not be so much fun!!!

He was so excited when the cake cooled and he could add the frosting! We baked the cake in the morning and these cute candles, well, they were adjusted ALL day, making sure they were just right for his big brother!
Up next......birthday party plans...

A Favorite Meal

We had a birthday this week and on your birthday in our house you get to choose the menu. We started this about 10 years ago and the boys love it! They change the menu several times until they get it just right! This time our birthday boy Kyle asked if I would make a meal our youngest Caleb loved the day before his birthday so they could both have their favorite meal. That is our Kyle, always thinking of his brother. He is the best big brother and it comes natural to him to be so kind and considerate.
I happily agreed to this because knowing Caleb's favorite meal is spaghetti I was happy to fix an easy meal. Let me stop here and say, I don't create my own sauce. Several years ago my sister discovered if you let Prego Spaghetti Sauce cook 6+ hours on low in the crock pot it makes the best tasting sauce ever! I think its the extra cooking time and all the seasonings blend. It makes for a wonderful pot of spaghetti that taste homemade. If you remove the lid when you get home and let it continue to cook until ready to serve it thickens up and it soooo good!!!
Of course I used the slow cooker liners that I just LOVE! It makes cleaning the crock pot as easy as pulling out the bag, throw it in the trash and damp cloth out the crock pot! How easy it that! When Caleb found our what we were having he said, "All Right!!! I love spaghetti!!!" It made it even better when he found out why we were having it!

Halloween Costumes

When I was little we enjoyed every holiday and look forward to them with great anticipation. Mom and Dad were great about taking the good and letting go of the bad and allowing us to enjoy every holiday Easter Bunny and all. One of my favorites was Halloween/Fall Carnival. Getting dressed up and of course getting candy was so much fun. Having 6 kids and living on a Pastors salary there was no extra money to buy costumes so my Mom always came up with amazing ideas. I can remember one year she made me a dress out of newspaper! Now we enjoy the holiday with our boys. Although we don't go trick or treating anymore we take a day off school, go to the seed store and purchase hay, flowers, pumpkins and decorate the front porch. We then go load up on good candy and fill the pumpkin. We plan a fun menu of finger food and rent a scary movie (ok, its usually a comedy but we say through the movie, its so scary! LOL!) We then sit back and wait for the kids to come to the door. Its so cute seeing all the costumes and smiles when you give them a hand full of candy or last year we gave popcorn balls which was a huge hit (no, I did not make them, got them from Wal-Mart!). Last year we kept seeing a flash out the window after a while we wondered what it was and when we opened the door we saw people using our porch as a back drop for photos!
That was a nice compliment.

Buying costumes can get expensive but sites like this one here make for a great deal. Monday - Friday at 9AM they offer $5 or under costumes. Now, I know, many of them I would not allow in my home but you can do like my parents did, take the good throw out the bad. Hope you have a great day planning for a fun holiday with your family.
